Youth Program

Mission

The Youth Program is designed to enhance leadership skills and awareness of the need for philanthropy, community service and civic participation in young people.

For two weeks, the youth program meets at different business, non-profit, and government locations throughout Arlington County to provide students the opportunity to be exposed to diverse organizations and meet with leaders from our community.

Program Specifics

Training is hands-on, experiential learning.  Daily sessions focus on professionalism, culture competency and commitment, mentoring, facilitation, and philanthropy.  One highlight is our “Philanthropy into Action” program session.  This session offers participants the experience to learn the value of philanthropy through site visits to local non-profits in Arlington.  Participants are given the task to decide on one non-profit to be the recipient of a $1,000 grant.  Students develop their own criteria for evaluating each non-profit, visit over 30 nonprofits during the program weeks, and come to a consensus on who is the recipient of the grant.

The goal of our youth program is that every young leader in Arlington be able to:

  1. Develop leadership skills through a strong curriculum taught by skilled facilitators;

  2. Gain an awareness of the need for community service, civic participation, and philanthropy;

  3. Increase familiarity with areas in Arlington beyond their immediate neighborhood and school;

  4. Interact with adult leaders in business, non-profits and public sectors; and,

  5. Acquire a network of adult and youth leaders in Arlington, which can form an excellent basis for their success in the work and college world.
