For two weeks, the youth program meets at different business, non-profit, and government locations throughout Arlington County to provide students the opportunity to be exposed to diverse organizations and meet with leaders from our community.
Training is hands-on, experiential learning. Daily sessions focus on professionalism, culture competency and commitment, mentoring, facilitation, and philanthropy. One highlight is our “Philanthropy into Action” program session. This session offers participants the experience to learn the value of philanthropy through site visits to local non-profits in Arlington. Participants are given the task to decide on one non-profit to be the recipient of a $1,000 grant. Students develop their own criteria for evaluating each non-profit, visit over 30 nonprofits during the program weeks, and come to a consensus on who is the recipient of the grant. Participants are also given the opportunity to job shadow a leader in the Arlington community in a field related to their interests for their future career. To see an example job shadowing experience, click here.
The goal of our youth program is that every young leader in Arlington be able to:

The 2010 Youth Program is typically held on the first
two weeks of August. Participating students will work with trained facilitators on a skill-based, experiential leadership program. The curriculum begins with a focus on self-awareness and personal development and then progresses to building skills in community development and leadership. It includes personal interaction with adults who lead Arlington’s business, nonprofit, and government sectors.
At the end of the program, students will have enhanced leadership skills, increased awareness of the value of civic participation, and familiarity with areas in Arlington beyond their immediate neighborhoods and schools. They also will be part of a network of adult and youth leaders in Arlington — a network that can help them as they complete high school and move on to college and careers.
Timing
Students apply to the program during their sophomore year (to participate the summer before their junior year) or their junior year (to participate the summer before their senior year).
